Costa Rica Living – Dr. Robert Schreiber is performing a study on the reasons why Nicoyans (Part of Costa Rica) live many years and in good health.
The canton of Nicoya, Guanacaste, is one of the five blue areas of the world, known because the inhabitants normally live over 100 years and remain in good physical and mental condition.
The other four areas are Okinawa in Japan, Loma Linda in California (USA), Sardinia in Italy, and Ikaria in Greece.
Schreiber, according to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), visited 9 people over 100 years old. He would talk with and observe their activities daily closely.
Dr. Robert Schreiber was one of the guests at Geriatric week in Costa Rica.
The objective of the study is to carry out blood tests, physical tests, ultrasound scans and other procedures among a group of at least 40 people over 100 in the province.
These results were to be compared with a similar number of adults over the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).
The National Hospital of Geriatrics and Gerontology has submitted the research protocol for consultation in the Local Bioethics Commission. Once this step is complete, they can continue with this study that would shed light on how to improve the quality of life of the population over 65 years of age.
Tests will be conducted with the support of the hospital’s Annexation of Nicoya and local health area.
In Nicoya, according to Dr. Morales Martinez, there are people over 90 years who are fully active, some of them still even ride horses.
