Anyone with jumpy kids or pets is about ready for the lightning season to be over already. September was the month with the most lighting we’ve experienced this year, causing both annoyances and medical emergencies.
September and October usually have lots of rain and thunderstorms and with them come lightning. Many people are left on edge at best and even without electricity for long periods of time.
The day of 2022 with the most lighting rays was April 8th, with 13,500. In the month of September, there were 117,200 lighting rays, which is about 3,900 per day or 163 per hour.
The parts of the country most affected by lightning include Alajuela, Atenas, San Mateo, Orotina, Santa Barbara, Flores, Belen, Santa Cruz, Nicoya, Nandayure, Hojancha, and Puntarenas.
Recently, a worker from the SJO airport was struck by lightning and rushed to the hospital in grave condition. Two other workers from the same terminal also suffered lightning strikes, as did a pineapple farmer.
