The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has provided a map to clarify where cyclists are prohibited, following inquiries by concerned cyclists. Police have been confiscating bikes seen on the Florencio del Castillo highway.
The map is available here: https://sig.mopt.go.cr:8084/r80k/index.html#10/10.3171/-84.2319
The roads marked in red are those that allow cars to go 80 kph or faster. Those are the roads where cyclists are prohibited, for their own safety.
The map is dynamic. It has geolocation in order to show the person where they are at the moment. The regulations are not new. The MOPT decided to make the map so everyone had the information whereas they used to respond to individual inquiries.
The Florencio del Castillo highway was a point of confusion because on parts of it traffic can move at 80 kph but in other parts it cannot. It was clarified that bikes are prohibited in all parts of this highway. This is a problem because it is the only way to get between Tres Ríos and Cartago.
