Costa Rica News – The father of the copilot who was killed in an airplane crash on December 31st in Guanacaste was himself commanding a plane from Chile to Costa Rica when he received the terrible news.
It was Emma Ramos Calderón, 26, who lost her life, along with 11 other people. She had studied and graduated as an engineer in Industrial Production at the Technological Institute of Costa Rica and later decided to study aviation to follow in her father’s footsteps.
The family recounts that following in her father’s footsteps was her biggest dream.
Her mother found out about the accident while visiting her grandmother’s house. Her grandmother still does not believe what is happening. She hopes Emma will soon return and tell her it was all a lie and that she is alive. Emma and her grandmother were very close.
The whole family is going crazy after receiving the news. How is one to cope? She was so young and died so tragically. The anguish they feel cannot be expressed in words.
They are changed forever.

Condolences. Having a father involved in commercial aviation, I suspect Emma was well trained. Articles which imply otherwise are almost libelous, at least in the US. A tragic plane crash which happened in the US some years ago which was piloted by two young pilots was it is believed the result of improper scheduling by their airline. They were deprived of rest with their schedule. The FAA jumped in and increased hour requirements for new pilots. This was addressing a problem which did not exist and penalizes new pilots to this day. Address the problem, don’t make up one to suit the incident. Increase weather minimums or mechanical inspection.
