Costa Rica News – Turtles are found playing outside the homes of residents of Ostional as well as along the streets.
Several reptiles have been found on roads and patios in the area, even 150 meters from the beach.
Jesús Anchía was sitting in his living room when he heard a noise from the courtyard. He opened the door to find his bicycle had been pushed over by a large olive ridley turtle.
Larger numbers of turtles than usual have been arriving at the beaches within the Ostional Wildlife Refuge and they’ve been staying much longer than normal.
This results in overcrowding and the turtles going farther.
Although stick barriers are put up to prevent them from leaving the beach, they push them aside. Anchía, a biology assistant at UCR, has personally taken 10 disoriented turtles back to the beach.
