Costa Rica News – Costa Rica’s Blue Flag program recognizes beach cleanliness. The beaches waving blue flags have been given a great honor and can be enjoyed knowing they meet high standards.
This ecological program includes 110 beaches currently. They are rated between 1 and 5 stars based on not only cleanliness but also security and tourist services. Many beaches do not qualify for the program so those that do are really out of this world.
In 2016, three beaches earned the top score, five stars. They are as follows:
Playa Matapalo in Guanacaste, which has clear sand and is very sunny
Playa El Madero in Puntarenas, which has white sand and a rock border
Playa Blanca, which is a white sand beach
Following those, with 4 stars, is Playa Playitas in Puntarenas, a swimming beach with white sand.
Then, with 3 stars, we have Playa Puerto Vargas, Playa Junquillal, Playa Esterillos Oeste, Playa Espadilla Sur, Playa Tortuguero, Playa Bejuco, and Playa Manuel Antonio.
