Costa Rica News – Walmart will buy the Perimercados, Super Compro and Saretto chains.
The request and agreement of purchase was announced on July 19 to the Commission for the Promotion of Competition of Costa Rica (COPROCOM).
The current owner of the brands is Gessa. This change in ownership will include 52 stores and over 1,300 employees and is subject to approval of COPROCOM and the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce. These entities can approve or deny it or insist on specific changes or details in the agreement.
Walmart and Gessa stores combining would better serve the Costa Rican market. Gessa’s current stores and collaborators will be able to offer better value to current customers and Walmart will grow in the region. The brands being bought will be rebranded to one of Walmart’s brands, such as Masxmenos, Maxi Palí or Palí.
Walmart currently operates 250 stores in the country. It has 1,836 suppliers in the country and is able to market 350,000 different products in the Central American market.
