Costa Rica News – SUNY Delhi’s culinary team won the Copa Culinaria Mundial Junior representing the United States in Costa Rica last week.
Team Delhi earned gold medals in both the hot and cold food categories to earn its first victory in international competition.
On Tuesday, members of the SUNY Delhi winning team told Action News about their historic win.
“We practiced so much and we came such a long way that we truly deserved this,” Delhi student and team member Oboseoye Ojeaga said.
Practice for the competition began in back in February and continued each week for 35 to 40 hours.
The team’s coach says preparation and skills learned in the classroom helped the students achieve success.
“Our students, the way they performed in such a mature manner, I think it definitely speaks volumes to what we are able to accomplish from a small town in the Catskill mountains,” said Culinary Coach Sean Pehrsson.
The team edged out El Salvador to bring home the victory.
It has competed in several regional and national competitions but this was their first try international.
