The University of Costa Rica (UCR) is taking the first steps in defining a strategy to divert young people from very poor counties Costa Rica. The goal is to have representation from graduates of schools with lower educational success. Ruth de la Asunción, Vice President for Student Life, confirmed that work to define a mechanism to guarantee enrollment in 2014.
As part of the authorities of the UCR heard the recommendations of José Manuel del Val Blanco, last week.
Del Val runs a similar project at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), which ensures 550 indigenous spaces each year.
This does not mean that the UCR will be prioritized by ethnicity, said Bernal Herrera, vice chancellor for teaching.
“People can be very varied. At first, it will be an experience quite small (not yet known how many) to be very careful and evaluating something that interests you get it right, “Herrera said.
Another criterion used this university is that the applicant is the first in his family to study there.
Also, a good parameter that is on the table is the investigation of Career Employment Observatory of the National Council of Rectors (CONARE).
That instance analyzed the number of college graduates by cantons between 2000 and 2007, public and private universities.
The municipality with less professional in those years was Guatuso, with only 3 of every 1,000 inhabitants.
The second place went to Leon Cortes (6 per 1,000), followed by Matina (7), Talamanca (7), Alvarado (8), Alajuelita (8), Sarapiquí (9), Los Chiles (9), Parrita (9 ), Garabito (11) and Guácimo (11).
However, the vice presidents also said that economic information should be added to define the public benefit.
“These are groups who have been disadvantaged in multiple ways. We analyze the population of the UCR to assess the representation of these populations, “said De la Asuncion.
While there are no idea how these students will be selected, the entrance examination will be kept current.
“This test has been validated,” he noted of the Assumption.
What I will is a strong support during the race, because these students need to strengthen areas such as Mathematics and Science courses for non-condemnation.
In the UCR are enrolled this year 38,114 people, of whom 7,495 are freshmen.
Two other public universities and apply models to reserve space for students of vulnerable populations.
The Technological Institute of Costa Rica (ITCR) has reserved 10% of enrollment in all their careers to public schools poor students living in the less developed counties.
Meanwhile, the National University (UNA) is a model that guarantees that 14% of its population coming from rural schools, night clubs, secondary schools and education programs open.
