Recognizing Rickettsiosis
Rickettsiosis might not be a common term in your health lexicon due to its rarity. This year, only three individuals suffered from this obscure illness, and unfortunately, all lost their lives to it. Notably, all three were residents of Aserrí.
Alert From Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health has issued a warning following the passing of three men from Rickettsiosis. All succumbed to the rarely observed disease within the past month and a half. The victims were two 43-year-old men and one 70-year-old man, pushing doctors into high alert for potential cases.
Rickettsiosis Cases Over the Years
Between January 2016 and July 23, only 19 individuals have been diagnosed with Rickettsiosis. The disease peaked in 2017 and 2018, with four cases reported each year. Out of the 19 patients, six have passed away, with three of those deaths occurring this year.
Rapid Progression of Symptoms
The recent three patients experienced rapid progression of symptoms, resulting in death within less than five days from symptom onset. Timely detection can lead to successful treatment of the disease.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Should you experience high fever or sickness for two consecutive days, immediate medical consultation is advised. This is especially important if you have been in forested areas, around wildlife, or have discovered ticks on your clothing or body.
How Rickettsiosis Spreads
Rickettsiosis spreads through ticks and fleas, but it’s important to note that it doesn’t transmit from person to person. If you find a tick on your clothing or body, preserve it in the refrigerator for ten days. If symptoms don’t manifest, you can discard it. However, if you exhibit symptoms and visit a doctor, take the tick with you for examination.
