In a significant move to streamline international travel and strengthen ties between nations, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has embarked on a promising journey with Costa Rica. Here’s what you need to know:
Historic Signing at Costa Rican Embassy
Today at the Costa Rican Embassy, a notable signing event took place, marking the initiation of formal negotiations to integrate Costa Rica into the Global Entry foreign partner fold. The event witnessed the esteemed presence of CBP’s Senior Official Troy A. Miller, Costa Rica’s President Rodrigo Chaves, and Minister of Security Mario Zamora Cordero. Following this crucial signing, President Chaves made his way to the White House for an official visit.
Miller’s Vision for Global Entry Expansion
Troy A. Miller emphasized the mutual commitment between the two nations, stating, “This cooperation reinforces our joint dedication to enhanced security, smooth commerce, and facilitating legitimate travel. We eagerly anticipate welcoming Costa Rica as a full Global Entry partner.”
Benefits for Costa Rican Citizens
Upon the conclusion of negotiations and consultations, approved Costa Rican citizens will be privileged with expedited entry into the U.S. via Global Entry portals at 85 significant airports across the U.S. and other countries.
Ambassador Crespo-Sancho’s Take on the Partnership
Highlighting the profound implications of this collaboration, Costa Rican Ambassador Catalina Crespo-Sancho remarked, “This partnership not only speeds up the entry process but also underscores the robust bond between Costa Rica and the US.”
Global Entry’s Growing Influence
To date, the CBP has on-boarded 16 nations into the Global Entry initiative, with countries like Israel and Japan in a pilot phase. Global Entry members, now exceeding 12 million, also enjoy TSA’s PreCheck® benefits, subject to rigorous background checks and in-person interviews. However, members may be chosen for further examination at U.S. entry points. Violations of terms lead to enforcement actions and termination of privileges.
