Costa Rica Travel News – I was hoping to find a little piece of paradise for my friends and I to get away and enjoy nature away from the busy city and overcrowded tourist areas. We found Cottage Casa Kolibrí and Cottage Casa Tucán in Turrialba and they were just what we had been seeking. Finca Pura Vida, the finca they are on, is incredible…even better than what we saw in the pictures. We saw quite a lot of wildlife including toucans, hummingbirds, sparrow hawks, armadillos and woodpeckers.
We were welcomed by Flora and Joaquin who showed us around and explained to us how to hike along the sugar cane and coffee plantations to get to the most magnificent view of the Rio Tuis valley.
The two vacation homes are the only ones on a 25 acre property. We spent a couple days just hiking on the property and sitting on the shore of the natural river, meditating and taking in all the fresh air and volcano views (Turrialba and Irazu). One day we enjoyed a nice swim.
Kolibrí fits two people and features an open space, a queen bed, full kitchen, bathroom with a hot water shower, and a roofed terrace with views of the tropical landscape. As most typical Costa Rican cottages, it has brickwork on the bottom and natural wood on top to keep the home cool. The cedarwood and laurel were beautiful choices.
Tucán is a lot more spacious, with two bedrooms, fitting four people. There is a queen bed, double bed, two wardrobes, a full kitchen, a living room, hot water shower in the bathroom, and a roofed patio complete with hammocks, a table and a barbecue that we used almost everyday.
The homes are very private but still close to adventure opportunities. Nearby there is rafting, mountain biking, Tapantí National Park, Turrialba volcano and the Guayabo Archaeological Reserve. In the nearby village of La Suiza there are several supermarkets, a fruit and vegetable market and even two bar-restaurants.
The homes are both well maintained and clearly well taken care of. The daily rates start at $40 and $60 and the weekly and monthly rates are even more affordable. Weekly costs are $240 and $350 and monthly rates are $720 and $1,100. The owner, Karl Tschida, speaks English, Spanish and German. He would be happy to make a deal with you for long term rentals.
