Costa Rica News – The loud noise started late Wednesday evening and was heard in quite a few towns surrounding the Turrialba Volcano, in Cartago.
The eruption that followed was the volcano’s largest in 150 years.
The experts reported increased activity in the afternoon and then a phreatic explosion at 11:10 pm. It left a layer of ash on homes, cars, roads and gardens. The ash reached as far as other provinces, Heredia and Alajuela.
The vapor and gas is spewing from two of the volcano’s craters.
It was pretty constant as of this morning. Eleven people were evacuated and others are standing by with packed bags in case of needing to evacuate.
There have been no reported injuries.
Preventative measures are being taken, such as a warning for airplanes to avoid a 20 mile radius around the volcano up to 19,000 feet.
No flights have been interrupted so far.
