Costa Rica News – The increased activity of the volcano Turrialba has effected 150 families living in a radius of five kilometers around the volcano, according to the National Emergency Commission (CNE).
In total, there are five communities that have water pollution, as well as felt the impact on crops and animals.
“In the case of animals and crops, both the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the National Animal Health Service (SENASA) are assessing the situation. On the issue of water, we are supplying a tank 700 people, about, “said Walter Fonseca, head of operations of the CNE.
Over the weekend the volcanic activity intensified and on Monday the biggest eruption was recorded, which caused a column of ash about one kilometer high.
Experts agree that the activity of the volcano has been similar to that of January 2010 and November 2015; however, there is a variation in the amplitude of the tremors.
“There are changes in seismic signals and increased eruptive activity,” said Mauricio Mora, from the National Seismological Network (RSN) and Javier Pacheco, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI).
Also, Guillermo Alvarado, the volcanologist of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), said that about four or five kilometers under the earth’s surface there is a significant amount of magma.
