World News – Bertha’s making moves across the Caribbean — and should spare the eastern U.S. The tropical storm, which formed late Thursday night, is expected to blow quickly through Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic beginning Saturday, according to The Weather Channel.
The storm, which has wind speeds around 50 mph, is located about 85 miles south of St. Croix. Areas also under a tropical storm warning include Martinique and the Turks and Caicos islands; the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic have tropical storm watches in effect.
The storm could drop around 1 to 3 inches of rain throughout the region until Sunday night, with some areas seeing as many as 8 inches.
Flash floods could also hit some areas — a change from the drought that has stricken islands in the region. The storm is projected to remain out to sea after affecting the islands in the Caribbean, avoiding the East Coast of the United States.
