When Danny Graham went for his usual steak and fries at the Bayview diner, in Chicago little did he know that he’d be travelling to Costa Rica within the week. It was not the steak that destroyed his tooth – it was the ice in his free glass of iced water.
“I was in agony for three weeks,” explains Mr Graham. “I honestly know of no pain greater than a tooth that has come away from itself and left nerves exposed. I am telling you if you want to lose weight then snap a tooth. You will not eat a thing.”
Mr Graham went that same day to a local dentist’s in Ashland Avenue. He was shocked by how much it was going to cost to get his teeth treated.
“I went home from the dentist’s feeling really despondent,” Mr Graham says. “I was really depressed that I was going to have to pay so many hundreds of dollars for an emergency treatment.”
Never a quitter, Mr Graham had a search online for a cheaper dentist, thinking he could jump in his truck and get to a dentist’s surgery, perhaps in another state. But one look at his bank account and Mr Graham realized he had to choose an economical option.
“I saw the dental costs in Costa Rica and I was on the plane the day after my accident,” says Mr Graham. “I am not sure whether it was the pain that made me think out of the box, or whatever it was. I am the least adventurous human being in the planet. I’d been to Canada before so I had a passport. I jumped on a plane at O’Hare and I was in Costa Rica the evening the day after my accident. I was in the dentist’s chair within 24 hours and on the beach within 48 with my repaired tooth and a Margarita in hand!”
Mr Graham must have enjoyed his stay.
When he returned to snowy Chicago, Mr Graham sold his truck and house and moved out to San Jose to work in an insurance company. He is now married with two kids and as happy as can be. He has since then got dental implants from the same dentist Costa Rica Dental Team.
“When I see iced water these days,” smiles Mr Graham, “I look at it with an element of fear and happiness. I assure you I will only drink the stuff with a straw!!”
