Costa Rica, renowned for its high-quality avocados, is a unique player in the global avocado industry. Despite local production and a high demand, the nation relies heavily on avocado imports.
Costa Rica’s Homegrown Avocados
In the lush landscapes of Costa Rica, avocados grow abundantly, some even on my property. These avocados are snapped up faster than we can harvest them, a testament to their superior quality and taste. Yet, paradoxically, Costa Rica imports a significant number of avocados compared to its exports.
Costa Rica’s Position in Global Avocado Exports
On the world stage, global avocado exports amount to 2.4 million tons. However, Costa Rica contributes a minuscule 34.7 tons to this figure. Several factors contribute to this small output, causing Costa Rica to lag in avocado production and exportation.
The Role of Avocado in the Costa Rican Diet
Despite the limited export volume, avocados remain a staple in the Costa Rican diet. Consequently, Costa Rica is one of the leading avocado importers globally.
Importing Avocados: Variety and Origin
Costa Rica primarily imports the criollo variety of avocados from its northern neighbors, Nicaragua. Furthermore, Hass avocados, originating from Mexico, have regained popularity since their import ban was lifted in 2022 after seven years.
Major Avocado Exporters Worldwide
Mexico dominates the avocado export market, accounting for a staggering 42% of total global exports. Other notable avocado exporting nations include Colombia, Peru, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, Kenya, Brazil, Haiti, Vietnam, Chile, Guatemala, Venezuela, El Salvador, Paraguay, Panama, and Bolivia.
Costa Rica’s Ranking in Avocado Exportation
Costa Rica’s role in the global avocado export market is relatively minor, ranking 33rd by volume out of the 37 countries that export avocados. While the country’s production and export volumes might be modest, the popularity and demand for this nutritious fruit remain high within its borders.
