Costa Rica News – Costa Rica is in an emergency status with the epidemic of road deaths. In fact, the insecurity on the streets negatively affects the country’s score on the social progress index.
Compared to other countries, Costa Rica ranked 56th, out of 128 countries, in the category of road safety.
It ranked 28th for nutrition and 105th for homicide.
The ranking for road safety calls for attention by national authorities. Something must be done to better manage the roads. A mechanism to deal with the epidemic has not yet been developed.
The problem goes far beyond deaths, as car and motorcylce crashes leave families without anyone to support them, creating further results.
A sociocultural approach is needed to solve the problem.
Roy Rojas, of Cosevi, explains that efforts will be unsuccessful if no more police are placed in transit at the most frequent times and places of accidents.
