For me The Nutcracker (El Cascanueces in Spanish) ballet marks true beginning of the holiday and Christmas season. I remember growing up and dressing up in our Sunday best to head to the theater with the family to watch the magic of the sugarplum fairies and the mouse king.
This Friday in Costa Rica the magic begins as you travel through Clara’s dream in The Nutcracker.
This marks the 5th year that the ballet lies in the hands of Costa Rican choreographers, Maria Amalia Banners and Patricia Carreras. But this year will prove to be a special performance.
For the music performed at the show all soloists are from Costa Rica. The supporting roles in the performace will be held by students of classical dance from across Costa Rica.
For example, the Copey de Dota children will play roles in the ballet as well as other children from around various parts of Costa Rica.
The principle cast will come from the national ballet of Prague and New York. Michal Stipa, Jonas Dolnik, Viktor Konvalinka will come from Prague and Steven Meledez will be performing from New York.
This year, according to Patricia Carreras, the performance has become of even higher quality as a result of years of effort. She advised the public to pay attention to the interpretation through dance of this year’s Nutcracker.
The ballet goes from the 5th to the 14th of December so start getting your tickets now.
