A Half-Century Wait: The San Carlos Road Project
The tale of the road expansion to the scenic San Carlos in Costa Rica is a journey that stretches back nearly five decades. Initially envisioned in 1974, construction didn’t kick into gear until 2005. Fast forward to thirteen years later, and the project was reportedly only 60% complete. The 37-kilometer long road has become a symbol of unfulfilled promises, with residents eagerly awaiting its completion through the tenure of four presidential administrations.
Delays and Cost Overruns in the San Carlos Road Expansion
Unfortunately, the most recent updates on the San Carlos road project paint a less than stellar picture. Not only will the cost of the project inflate, but the projected delivery date has also been pushed back. Initially scheduled for completion in 2025, the revised forecast suggests a mid-2027 completion, causing additional frustrations among residents.
Lack of Commitment From MOPT
The San Carlos Pro-Highway Association has expressed dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT). The Association’s president stated, “We need more commitment from the MOPT. We don’t see the commitment.”
Financial and Logistical Challenges in the Road Expansion
The projected total cost for the project is an eye-watering $340 million, with only $200 million secured to date. Additionally, the bidding and award process for the southern and central sections is yet to be finalized, adding to the project’s complexities. Moreover, the current budget does not account for the expansion of two bridges required for the road. Even the acquisition of necessary land presents hurdles, with 185 plots still undergoing the expropriation process.
A Road to Nowhere or a Journey’s End?
While the road to San Carlos remains an elusive dream for many, it’s hard to tell when this long-awaited journey will conclude. A personal estimate places the completion date in 2047, but one can only hope it doesn’t take that long.
