Costa Rica News – The Turrialba volcano crater has widened due to landslides of the south wall. Scientists discovered large detachments from the south wall of this active crater. They had fallen and created an obstruction.
In fact, they created a seal in the duct which was found to have been the cause of the two explosive eruptions recorded on the 5th and 10th of this month.
Ovsicori volcanologist Eliécer Duarte went to the top of the volcano on the 9th and found solid fragments of up to 25 centimeters that dropped 100 meters. He also found impact marks in the middle of the ash layer and thicker material that remained on a nearby surface.
The seal created led to a pressure below that exceeded the weight of the fallen material so an eruption happened. Many of the expelled pieces were pulverized but others can be examined. They have a yellowish removable crust caused by the gases. This shows they were the fallen pieces not new ones.
Smaller energy explosions were recorded on the 15th with ash and gas almost 1000 meters in height. Fine ash fell in various locations.
