Costa Rica Sports – The Texas A&M Aggies will embark on an eight-day trip to Costa Rica, beginning Sunday, March 12. The spring break trip includes a pair of exhibition matches against Costa Rica’s finest club teams.
The Aggies have matches scheduled against Saprissa, the Costa Rica league runner-up, and Moravia, who won the inaugural UNCAF Women’s Inter-Club Championship last May along with the 2016 Costa Rican Apertura title last September.
“We are all very excited about the Costa Rican adventure ahead for Aggie Soccer,” head coach G Guerrieri said. “We have played very well in our first two exhibition games of 2017 at Ellis Field, so getting two more international matches versus the two best teams in Costa Rica will be a terrific test for this young, talented squad.”
In addition to the two matches, the itinerary includes community service, sight-seeing, adventure and cultural immersion. Highlights of the trip include a visit to a children’s community center, a walking tour of San Jose, a zip-line tour in Punta Leona Beach, a tour of a coffee plantation and Poas Volcano National Park and whitewater rafting.
“Soccer aside, the opportunity for our student-athletes to go abroad to live in and experience a foreign culture is one of the special things Texas A&M stresses for all of its students,” Guerrieri said.
The spring break trip is a unique opportunity for Texas A&M’s six newcomers that started their collegiate academics in January. Briana Alston (D – Ashburn, Va.), Olivia Ausmus (GK – Spring, Texas), Abby Grace Cooper (F – Plano, Texas), Addie McCain (MF – Wylie, Texas), Cosette Morché (GK – Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Sophie Salverino (F – Katy, Texas) add to a wealth of talent on the Aggies’ roster.
“We already have a very close-knit team,” Guerrieri said. “So, gaining these new ‘experiences of a lifetime’ together, is another big bonus for building a championship level team, especially for our six new players.”
Texas A&M returns 16 letterwinners from the 2016 campaign, including nine of 12 starters (players who started 50 percent or more matches). The returnees account for 24 of the Aggies’ 27 goals from last season and the Maroon and White add the potent Ally Watt who redshirted last season while playing for the United States U20 Women’s National Team. Texas A&M welcomes back All-American Mikaela Harvey, along with fellow All-SEC performer Haley Pounds and former SEC All-Freshman honorees Emily Bates, Grace Piper and Watt.
