Exponential Growth in Computer Scams Cases
A startling rise in computer scam cases has been observed in Costa Rica, with annual cases soaring up to 9,000. In comparison to 2021’s 3,576 cases, this signifies an alarming 160% increase in 2022. The swift escalation of these computer crimes presents a grave concern to society.
Continual Rise in Cyber Crime Cases in 2023
According to the Judiciary Planning Directorate, the growth trend shows no signs of slowing down. In the first five months of 2023 alone, Costa Rica has already witnessed 4,331 such cases, outstripping the total cases for the entire 2021.
Cybercriminals Taking Advantage of Online Banking
Experts in the financial field suggest this upsurge is due to cybercriminals exploiting the amplified use of banking through electronic platforms. They carry out illicit activities that prey on the vulnerabilities of these systems.
Computer Fraud: The Predominant Cyber Crime
Among the various cybercrimes, computer fraud stands as the most common, carrying a penalty of up to six years in prison. While identity theft and computer sabotage also feature in the courts, they represent a minority when compared to computer fraud.
Challenges in Tackling Computer Crimes
The majority of computer crime cases are, unfortunately, dismissed due to a lack of sufficient evidence. If the perpetrator cannot be identified, or if the statute of limitations expires, the case is dismissed.
Moreover, the lack of specialized judges for these types of crimes poses another hurdle. The government is encouraged to furnish the OIJ and Public Ministry with the necessary technical, economic, and human resources to combat these cases more effectively.
