Costa Rica News – After 143 years of silence Turrialba began to show signs of reactivation in 2002.
Fumaroles widened and more and more gas was released until January 5, 2010 when it had an ash eruption.
More recently, volcanologists are finding remains of a magmatic eruption in Turrialba.
The specialists at Ovsicori explain that this could be a signal that a magmatic body is close to the surface.
Rocks and stones emerged from the crater at temperatures of 800 to 900 degrees Celsius. They covered a 15,000 square meter area in the eastern sector of the now active crater.
That discovery was made on January 26th. It is the first time the exit of this material in the form of rocks was able to be documented in this current period of emanations.
Some of the rocks were up to two meters long.
