An Unexpected Stay Turned Passion Project
In February 2020, US native Stefanie Tannenbaum touched down in Costa Rica with her partner and baby for a leisurely break. Little did she know, the coastal town of Nosara would soon become her permanent home after getting stranded due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sendero: A Sustainable Boutique Hotel with a Heart
Fast forward nearly four years, and Stefanie proudly introduces us to Sendero, her dream sustainable boutique hotel. Crafted with the ethos of a “neighborhood hotel,” Sendero promises its guests a unique “sense of belonging.” Collaborating closely with the locals, the hotel boasts a surf school, yoga studio, and art gallery, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the authentic Nosara experience.
Why Nosara?
For Tannenbaum, Nosara was more than a holiday destination. The “magical” ambiance, combined with the community’s warmth and the town’s incredible natural beauty, made it irresistible. Nosara, nestled in the heart of Costa Rica’s pristine landscape, boasts a 90-acre biological reserve teeming with howler monkeys, turtles, and over 270 bird species.
Building Dreams with Friends
Previously residing in Massachusetts, Tannenbaum recalls feeling isolated in the US. But in Nosara, she found her tribe. Alongside her newfound friends and business partner, Sarah Kosterlitz, Stefanie invested her life savings, turning the vision of Sendero into reality.
Eco-conscious Design Choices
A hallmark of Sendero is its unwavering commitment to sustainability. Opting to embrace the natural surroundings, the hotel integrates a colossal tree right at its restaurant’s heart. Further, materials sourced locally, solar panels, and advanced water recycling underline the hotel’s eco-promise.
Culinary Delights and Local Integration
Sendero’s restaurant stands as its vibrant hub, serving tantalizing local dishes like freshly-caught tuna ceviche. The hotel’s commitment to uplift and not replace local traditions is evident, with the surf school and art gallery showcasing the best of Costa Rica.
Diverse Accommodation Options
Catering to various demographics, Sendero offers 25 distinctive rooms, from luxurious suites to their signature jungle rooms with open-air showers. These bold choices have received rave reviews, marking them as guest favorites.
Sendero: A Path in Every Sense
The name “Sendero” translates to “path” in Spanish, reflecting both the physical path stretching across Nosara’s coastal front and the metaphorical journey of life that the hotel hopes to influence.
A Heartfelt Homecoming and Look to the Future
Upon the easing of travel restrictions, Stefanie returned to the US momentarily, reuniting with her pet dog. Today, she is in the process of becoming an official Costa Rican resident, cherishing the life she’s built in Nosara and eagerly anticipating what’s next on her path.
