A champion of physics and chemistry, Fabrizio Salas, from the Scientific School of Alajuela, obtained 799.20 points on the UCR admission test. He and Mariela Jiménez Monge and Valeria Vargas Acosta received the three highest scores.
Those with the 30 highest scores were called to the stage in a ceremony to honor them. Salas thought he would be called as the 29th but as it turned out the 17-year-old was in first place. It brought his parents to tears.
He hopes to study physics and eventually go on to specialize in particle physics. He won the gold medal at the National Physics Olympics this year as well as in 2017. He also took the gold medal at the 2018 edition of the Chemistry Olympiad and silver in 2017.
41,335 applicants took the Academic Aptitude Test. 25,475 passed with at least 442 points. The results can be consulted through the website: http://www.ori.ucr.ac.cr.
