Costa Rica News – The Spanish hotel chain RIU is accused of causing environmental damage in the Matapalo beach in Carrillo.
There will be a criminal trial with a public prosecutor and local representatives of the hotel.
The Goicoechea criminal court confirmed that the initial report for the case was issued on October 30th by judge Adriana Sobrado Barquero.
The accusation is of malfeasance, misrepresentation and violations of maritime and forest law.
According to the Public Ministry, part of the Riu resort was constructed in a forest. The indictment indicated that as a result of various offenses the wooded area has been destroyed.
The offenses are also said to have affected a maritime zone which was not leased. There was no concession of that maritime zone and the hotel is said to have used it, a public space, illegally.
