Costa Rica Travel News – If you are looking for an alternative tourist attraction in Costa Rica, the Jaguar Rescue Center is a great place to visit in Puerto Viejo. The 1.5 hour tour is worth the $15 fee, as you can get up close and personal with the animals in different stages of rehabilitation.
Volunteer guides give English and Spanish language tours (or private tours in Dutch or German) and are very knowledgeable. If you are an animal lover, you might want to start looking forward to the part of the tour where you can even go inside the cages and feed some of the monkeys.
Tours are very organized and show you all there is to see. The stories of how the animals came to live at the refuge are touching and it’s great to see the great lengths gone through to rehabilitate them and allow them the chance at life in the wild once again.
All of the animals at the Jaguar Rescue Center have gone through traumatic experiences and need rehabilitation to some degree to get back into the wild. Monkeys, cats, sloths, reptiles, deer, raccoons and many other species all receive one-on-one care and direct contact from staff and volunteers. Some of the animals live in enclosures that imitate their natural habitat, stimulating their natural mechanisms, like defenses, while others run and fly freely around the center.
The tour is a great way to learn about the animals and is perfect for people of all ages. Everyone seems so passionate about what they do and this makes visitors enjoy the tour even more. As a non-profit, they are in need of donations and support from visitors.
