The Ministry of Health has stopped the use of all drugs containing ranitidine, a medicine used to treat gastric problems. They will no longer be marketed in the country due to cancer risk.
Anyone currently on this medication should consult a doctor to change it. These medicines, used to reduce the production of acid in the stomach and such treat reflux and gastric ulcers, include all brands of ranitidine as well as zantac.
A compound in these drugs was found to be a probable carcinogen based on animal studies. Long-term exposure above certain levels may increase one’s risk of cancer.
Reviews of the medications are ongoing. It is not believed to have caused damage to patients but is being removed as a precaution due to the possible cumulative effects. Medication should not be stopped or changed without consulting a doctor.
