Costa Rica’s Museo de Arte Costarricense in La Sabana proudly presents a unique cultural experience, “Puguán Puguán: Sound Narratives,” starting this Sunday, April 21, at 10 a.m. at the museum’s illustrious Golden Hall. This project, a joint effort by the Alliance Française and the Costa Rican Art Museum (MAC), aims to offer visitors a novel way to traverse through Costa Rica’s rich historical tapestry through the eyes of Puguán Puguán, a fictional character brought to life by French writer Norbert Merjagnan and Costa Rican writer María Montero.
Immersive Art and Sound Narratives
Set in the stunning Golden Hall, decorated with a bronze-colored stucco relief by French artist Louis Féron, the project marries visual art with sound narratives, creating an immersive experience that transports visitors back in time. This initiative is part of the digital festival “Noviembre Digital,” and also commemorates the 45th anniversary of the MAC, culminating in a celebration on International Day of Creativity and Innovation.
The relief in the Golden Hall, created by Féron, presents a chronological depiction of Costa Rica’s history from pre-Columbian times to the republican period, concluding with the inauguration of the airport in 1940. The narrative captures key historical events and figures that have shaped the nation, offering visitors a panoramic view of the country’s heritage.
From Diplomatic Hall to Golden Hall: A Space of International Encounter
Originally known as the Diplomatic Hall, this venue hosted significant international meetings and events when the building served as the country’s main airport terminal. Today, transformed into one of the museum’s principal exhibition spaces, it offers a backdrop that connects the past with the present through a critical examination of official narratives and an invitation to rethink creativity and innovation.
The Collaborative Effort Behind Puguán Puguán
This fully collaborative project combines French expertise provided by the Alliance Française with the creativity and imagination of Costa Rican contributors. Unendliche Studio from France directed the artistic portion, while the narrative was co-written by Merjagnan and Montero. Contributions also came from young students who participated in research sessions, adding imaginative elements to the story.
Historian Valeria Mora from the University of Costa Rica offered scholarly insights, enriching the narrative. The Spanish version features voices of local talents such as actress Monserrat Montero, singer Berenice, and actor Andrés Montero, with post-production handled by Central postproducer.
