Costa Rica Sports – The Portland Timbers are reportedly on the cusp of making their first big signing of the off season.
Multiple reports this weekend have linked the Timbers to Costa Rican midfielder David Guzman, who currently plays for Deportivo Saprissa.
MLS Transfers reported Saturday that the Timbers had inked Guzman to a two year contract, while La Nacion, which is one of the largest media sources in Costa Rica, reported Sunday that the Timbers were interested in signing Guzman, but had not yet reached a deal with Saprissa.
Timbers coach Caleb Porter was recently spotted on a recruiting trip in Costa Rica, which adds plausibility to the reports.
Guzman is a holding midfielder, a position the Timbers were planning to target this off season. He has been a starter for Saprissa for the past four years and has also earned nine caps for the Costa Rica National Team since 2010.
The Timbers have not announced any signings so far this off season.
