Costa Rica News – For all those that need to do a border run to renew their tourist visa, you might want to wait until January or take a flight.
Although this is no surprise as it happens every year at this time, the border crossings between Costa Rica and Nicaragua become filled with Nicaraguans going home for the holidays.
The most common place that the Nicas are using to get home is Peñas Blancas.
This year however is setting records for border crossings. This past Saturday by noon as reported by the director of security, 4,377 people had passed through the border post at Peñas Blancas.
On Friday, 3,791 people left Costa Rica and 2,195 people entered the country.
The numbers will continue to grow this coming week as people are getting let off for the holidays and returning to their families.
Security forces and immigration are working 24 hours to ensure a smooth processing of people at the borders.
According to sources by the year’s end an estimated one million people will have passed through the border post at Peñas Blancas.
