Costa Rica News – Some 14,000 vehicles are rotting due to the climate and the abandonment of their owners. These cars, trucks and motorcycles have been seized by MOPT and the owners haven’t picked them up, most likely due to high fines.
8,256 motorcycles are on these lots owned by MOPT, mainly because they were involved in accidents. 1,045 cars are in the Cartago location alone. In Alajuela there are 400 cars and over 4,000 motorcycles.
The numbers speak volumes.
These vehicles are damaged by the elements and even covered in weeds. It was decided that these abandoned vehicles would be donated to clear the lots, which are becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes that can carry Dengue.
The process to donate them can take about eight years! This is because they have to take an inventory and unsubscribe them from the property registry.
This week they made the first donation, of 217 cars to the Holy Spirit Works Association.
Just an idea but why not auction off the vehicles that function?
