Costa Rica Shipping – Costa Rican Customs has retained over 13 tons of goods from the USA this quarter for not meeting reporting requirements.
Some of the items retained are new and used clothing, appliances, televisions, tools, cosmetics and food.
The operations carried out by Customs take place in fiscal stores throughout the country. The majority of merchandise retained corresponds to shipments from Costa Ricans residing in the US being sent to their families.
Many were sent in the name of legal societies with general descriptions. Some were sent via companies that charge based on the dimensions of the boxes rather than the contents. This is often a sign that the merchandise is not accurately declared and more tax may be due.
The merchandise retained is held in Santamaría Customs until the interested parties submit the due paperwork and taxes to withdraw the items. Once the statute of limitations expires the items are auctioned or destroyed.
