Costa Rica News – Well this is a step in the right direction when it comes to moving into a place where you are going to be able to say take me to the corner of Avenue 3 and Calle 2, instead of take me 100 meters past the place where the tree got hit by lightning and next to the house with the blue gate. Well at least maybe a year form now when people and taxis get used to the street names.
Two street signs were ‘symbolically’ placed upside down to mark the start of the project to formally name streets and avenues in the central canton of San José.
The San Jose Municipality josefina reported that they had already successfully placed Street 0, Avenue 0, where the inauguration took place.
A total of 22,000 will have signs will be places all over the county, which will go against the walls or poles, depending on the site.
The installation will take an expected six months.
Mayor Johnny Araya, emphasized the importance of this plan to modernize the capital.
“Today (yesterday), on the occasion of World Tourism Day, San Jose takes a step forward to be more attractive to tourists and stop giving directions with the current primitive system,” said Araya .
Marco Rivera, general manager of the Bank of Costa Rica, said that this project is very useful for them to streamline the delivery of letters and reduce operating costs.
It is also expected to benefit institutions using daily messaging and billing services.
After the street signs are in place, there will be a second phase in which each building will be provided with specific number.
The project has a total cost of $1.2 million and is funded by the National Bank and the Bank of Costa Rica.
