Deputies and legislators are worried about reports about an apparent entry of Nicaraguan soldiers into Costa Rican waters. Aside from entering illegally, they are reported to have persecuted Costa Rica fishermen.
These actions allegedly happened on Friday, October 7, at El Jobo beach, in Punta Descartes. This is in Guanacaste. The complaint details that Nicaraguan Naval Force vessels entered Costa rican maritime territory and chased Costa Rican boats.
Seven legislators from the International Forum requested that the chancellor start an investigation. This situation must be clarified in order to avoid potential political instability between the nations.
There was a boundary treaty created in 1858 that made Salinas Bay common to both countries. Both can take advantage of it and both have the obligation to defend it. The Nicaraguan Army and military patrol boats have had a tendency to approach right up to the border in a defensive position with their rifles. Fishermen and tourists often don’t even know about the treaty.
In any case, Jobo beach is not part of the treaty and entering that area was a clear provocation and offense to the sovereignty of Costa Rica so formal complaints have been made and an investigation will be carried out. There are witnesses and videos. There’s hope of diplomatic actions so that the events are not repeated.
