Costa Rica News & Events – When coming to Costa Rica there are so many adventure and extreme sports to experience. Mountain bikers have always enjoyed Costa Rica’s jungles. Now there’s a special event in the works that will attract bikers from around the world. The 100-mile mountain bike race will go around one of Costa Rica’s volcanoes.
The adventure race will circle Rincon de la Vieja. This challenge will happen this month, on the 24th. The endurance race will begin at the Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin in Guanacaste. It’s the only race worldwide that circles an active volcano.
Rincon de la Vieja is the biggest volcano in the region, at 6,286 feet tall. It was a sacred place to the ancient Curubande tribe and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 100-mile race will go through five microclimates including arid plains and cloud forests. Riders will go through rivers, on gravel, red clay, and white calcium road. The total elevation they will climb is 10,862 feet. The climate and terrain variety in the area makes for an interesting race.
Costa Rica recently held the North Face Endurance Challenge, and will soon hold the Adventure Racing World Championships. They are now on the world’s map for endurance sports. There is another mountain biking event that happens annually. In La Ruta de los Conquistadores top bikers travel rugged terrain from coast to coast in just three days.
For the race around Rincon you may stay at Hacienda Guachipelin hotel which is located just 15 miles from the Liberia airport. If riding 100 miles isn’t enough adventure for you, the area is also known for zip lines, waterfall rappelling, and horseback riding. After all your adventures are done, relax in a thermal hot spring that’s naturally heated by the volcano.
The adventure race on Aug. 24, 2013, is the first of its kind in Costa Rica and Latin America, and the only race in the world to circumnavigate an active volcano, according to race promotional material.
