Costa Rica Business – Medical devices have taken over the lead in exports from Costa Rica. This sector represented 28% of the sales from this January to September. Agriculture used to have the lead but now has 26% of the total, according to the Foreign Trade Promoter.
Precision equipment and other medical device and care manufacturing has become a specialty of the country. Edwards Lifesciences specializes in this. Medical devices brought in $2,394 million in the first nine months of 2018, up 14% from the same period in 2017.
Agricultural exports, such as pineapple, banana and coffee, brought in $2,212 million. When considering all sectors, exports are up 6% since last year. Exports have reached 7,428 million in these nine months.
The food industry exports were actually down 1% since the same period last year. Specific products that are decreasing in demand are fruit concentrates, down 18%, and sugar, down 18%.
