Costa Rica News – The tico cyclist, Marcos “Makey” Benavides has reached the World Cup after pedaling an impressive 3,500 kilometers. He spent 40 days on his bike.
It was not an easy trip. Before even leaving Costa Rica, his phone was stolen in the airport. He flew to Holland where his biking started. He made his way to Estonia. While waiting for his visa to enter Russia, he was running out of money. He had unexpected costs and wait times so he got to know Narda. He even participated in a 21km athletic event and got a medal. He couldn’t afford a hotel and slept in a cemetery for three days as well as in a former refugee camp used during World War II. The nights were cold and he had to bundle up. He was afraid police would find him and kick him out. He didn’t speak the language but was able to watch what others ate and gesture which item he wanted. He enjoyed many instant hot soups during the cold nights.
For the last World Cup, he traveled 7,000 km and sailed along the Amazon River to reach Brazil. He likes challenges.
He is thankful to sponsors and supporters. He was motivated through social media comments to keep going. He thanks God for arriving healthy.
Makey was planning to buy a ticket to watch Costa Rica play but due to his troubles getting the visa he is left without a budget. He plans to enjoy the global atmosphere in any case. Anyone up for buying him a ticket after that incredible journey?
