Altered guaro has taken the lives of six men and two women between the ages of 44 and 66 in the recent weeks. Because of this, the Ministry of Health has gotten involved and presented a criminal complaint to judicial authorities.
The deaths were due to poisoning by a chemical called methanol. This is a non-drinkable form of alcohol frequently used in fuel and antifreeze. It is toxic when consumed.
Last week, the Ministry of Health issued a warning so that the public would know not to drink Guaro Montano. Now it is known that other brands are also affected. Baron Rojo, Timbuka, and Molotov spirits have also been tampered with.
The Fiscal Control Police and the Ministry of Health are confiscating these products from shops. The General Health Law allows the Ministry of Health to sanction and close establishments that continue to market these products.
The Ministry of Health should be contacted at [email protected] immediately if someone is found to have been poisoned with altered guaro and at [email protected] if you know of an establishment or person selling these products.
