Costa Rica News – Sex education classes are given to ninth year students.
The Ministry of Education announced that tenth year students will receive, as of next year, a specific subject on the matter as well.
In the ninth year, they learn about preventing pregnancy and illness. The class in the tenth year will approach additional topics such as preventing dating violence and improper relationships.
Psychology teachers will teach the tenth year course. It will include the study of diversity of gender identities, gender expressions and sexual orientations. The emphasis will be on respect.
Issues will be discussed in groups to identify myths, fears, and solutions to dangers.
It’s great these topics are being covered but it’s rather late considering 55% of young people have their first sexual relationship between the ages of 13 and 15.
