ICE Ramps Up Fuel Usage Amid Shortfall of Clean Energy
Amid a marked shortage in electricity generated from clean energy sources this month, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) is increasingly burning fuel to meet the soaring energy demand. This sudden spike in ICE’s fuel consumption is expected to result in higher energy bills for consumers during the second half of this year.
Escalation in Pollutant Emissions as Hydrocarbons Burn
Significantly, the burning of hydrocarbons currently contributes up to 20% of the daily electricity consumption. This uptick is leading to a notable increase in pollution, further impacting the environmental health of the region.
The Role of The National Electricity Control Center
The National Electricity Control Center, responsible for energy dispatch, has reported a deficiency in electricity generated from clean sources. This has necessitated the ramped-up burning of diesel in bunkers.
Dominance of Hydroelectric Power in Costa Rica’s Energy Mix
ICE, rural distribution cooperatives, and private entrepreneurs cumulatively provide almost 70% of the electricity consumed in Costa Rica, predominantly sourced from hydroelectric power plants.
Criticism Towards ICE for Non-renewal of Contracts
ICE has come under criticism for not renewing contracts with six private hydroelectric plants. The continuation of these contracts could have reduced the necessity for importing fuel and curtailed the current reliance on burning fuel.
