The tourism businesses in the northern sector of Costa Rica could go under entirely. 10,000 tourism workers have been out of jobs since March. Businesses look towards the future without much hope of survival.
Just after they were allowed to open hotels at 50% and grab hold of a few clients and sustain some jobs, the area was shut down again. This is because of the orange alert due to a covid-19 outbreak in the area.
The outbreak occurred in two tuber packing plants outside of La Fortuna. On June 8, there was a meeting between the Ministry of Health, the National Emergency Commission, and the municipality of San Carlos.
The area needs Government involvement to contain the crisis. The northern area is at particular risk due to illegal border crossings from Nicaragua. Business owners in La Fortuna are committed to doing everything necessary to stop the spread of the virus. They do have complaints, though, because the packing houses where the outbreaks happened are not being closed yet their businesses are. These concerns will be brought before a high-level commission.
