Gyms and similar facilities, such as CrossFit studios, have had a real rough time with the pandemic. Each Friday, the sanitary restrictions for the next two weeks can change. Gyms were closed from July 11 to July 19. The measure continues until July 31 in areas under orange alert.
Some 20% of training centers in Costa Rica have already gone under, being unable to pay rent. Others have let staff go or looked for less expensive locations. Still others are striving to maintain activity in one form or another.
When allowed to open, they can do so at just 50% occupancy. Staff must wear masks. Social distancing must be enforced. After each use, machines must be deeply disinfected. Even the cost of cleaning supplies has affected the ability to stay in business.
To make a way, some gyms and centers offer virtual personal sessions to work out from home. Some even sell kits with weights or rent equipment. Some schedule live video classes via an app.
