San Jose, Costa Rica – The National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Response (CNE) today declared a green alert for the volcanoes Rincon de la Vieja, Poas and Turrialba. The decision was made in order to maintain constant watch on the sites and warn the visitors of the activity of the volcanoes.
The action taken by the CNE is supported by reports from technical and scientific bodies that report ongoing activity in these volcanoes.
In the case of Turrialba, it has maintained the levels of volcanic and seismic activity that has shown in recent months.
The Poas Volcano has shown a drop in lake level and that precludes an increase in the release of gases.
The Rincon de la Vieja volcano has experienced fluid movements and volcanic activity at significant levels, the CNE announced.
The Technical Advisory Committee on Volcanology and Seismology of the CNE, supported by the National Seismological Network of the University of Costa Rica (RSN-UCR-ICE) and the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of the National University (OVSICORI) maintain a surveillance of these volcanoes.
The green alert strengthens measures and preventive actions that the institution has been coordinating, along with the entities of the National Risk Management and the cantons neighbors near these volcanoes.
