Costa Rica News – Well this alert can be seen as good or bad for those people looking to head to the beach this weekend. Families with small children probably not a good idea but for those looking to surf it might be a great weekend to hit the waves.
The National Emergency Commission (CNE) today declared a green alert for the entire Pacific coast for potential strong waves and swells on the coast from today until Sunday.
The decision came after the Center for Research in Ocean Sciences and Limnology (Cimar), University of Costa Rica (UCR), warned of the risk of high waves.
The phenomenon is due, according to the report, there was an extratropical Pacific megaciclón southern Africa, which led to a strong surge that has been moving northward, and is expected to hit the shores of our country from Thursday at noon today until Sunday.
The surf-report detailed the CNE-have maximum of 22 to 20 seconds to return period of the wave, which experts identified as a very strong swell breaks on the beaches. Typically, the waves break every 12 seconds.
Omar Lizano oceanographer explained that the longer duration of the waves means coming from longer and, if they are close together, they originate from close range.
A similar situation was experienced by the country earlier this month, when a high tide caused damage to at least 35 homes in Caldera, in the canton of Esparza and in Golfito.
Waves will have heights over two meters, especially on Fridays and Saturday, predicted the CNE.
