A flight organized by the US Embassy in Costa Rica will take American citizens home from Costa Rica. It is a paid flight, not a government funded rescue flight. Many Costa Ricans will take advantage of the flight going to pick up Americans by taking it from the U.S. to Costa Rica.
These Costa Ricans, about 138 of them, want to flee the U.S. for Costa Rica because of the coronavirus pandemic. They have to pay for their own tickets for the private charter flight and arrange transportation to Houston where the flight will leave from.
The flights will take place on April 17th, returning Costa Ricans to Costa Rica and Americans to the U.S.A. There are a total of 166 places each way. 85 of the 138 Ticos interested are coming from the New York area, a city devastated by the pandemic.
Five Ticos have died of covid-19 in the U.S. The most recent was an 81-year-old man who contracted it somehow without leaving his home.
The number of patients worldwide is approaching 2 million. 572,000 have been sickened in New York. In Costa Rica, there have been 612 infected and three deaths.
