The State of the Nation Program has come up with a ranking of the vehicular traffic jams in the county, based on an analysis of 20 million records of drivers throughout the year 2017.
This study shows the 10 worst congestion points in the country. These have the highest road congestion in Costa Rica. The areas are almost a kilometer in diameter each and each is an area where several roads connect causing concentrated frequent traffic jams.
The worst 10 are:
Central San Jose
Central San Pedro
Zapote
Central Alajuela
Central Heredia
Guadalupe
Curridabat
The zone between Barrio México and Cinco Esquinas de Tibás
The zone between la rotonda Juan Pablo II and la autopista General Cañas
The sector of the capital from Sabana East to paseo Colón
Because these areas are urban there is not room to add more roads. A better solution would be reducing the use of automobiles and providing optimized conditions for bikes and a more efficient mass transit system.
