Costa Rica Health News – A beautiful healthy smile is a precious asset that can help us exude a positive aura and create a good lasting impression. As we age though it takes more time, work and effort to keep our smile healthy because as we age we experience tooth loss.
According to dental experts, when a tooth is lost bone loss occurs as well due to reduction of stimulation from chewing food, which then causes facial structural change like wrinkled lips and sunken chin and mouth. We can live with missing tooth or teeth but it is guaranteed that we will feel insecure and will think negatively about ourselves. Now why live like a shell of our old self when we can live happily and freely with artificial tooth?
There are several well-known effective procedures one can undergo to get a replacement for the missing tooth he or she has. The most common option to replace missing teeth is by using dentures. However, dentures are unsecured and can come loose anytime and may result to further discomfiture to the user. Though dentures are designed to look like natural teeth, they feel different from natural teeth and when loose they make clicking sounds when speaking or eating. It may also cause loss of appetite because the palette of the user is covered by the denture.
Do not lose heart; there is a better alternative to traditional dentures called dental implants which would definitely improve your quality of life, confidence and eating habits.
If you are not that familiar with the term you may ask: “What are dental implants?” A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is implanted into the jaw to hold and support a false tooth or group of teeth. Dental implants provide a new root system that allows singular or multiple teeth to be fitted with crowns. Since implants are inside the jaw they provide secure anchor and work like a natural teeth wherein the wearer need not worry that the false teeth he or she is wearing may come loose. Another great factor about dental implants is that they are made with titanium or titanium alloy – the strongest metal known to mankind – which is proved to be biocompatible and merges with the bones along the jaw. This makes dental implants durable and sterile way to replace missing teeth. Furthermore, since dental implants are made with the best materials and done with precision using advanced technology they last a lifetime.
Depending on what is required, we can choose from three different types of dental implants. The first option is a removable implant over-denture where teeth are anchored to two or more dental implants. With this type, teeth can be removed for cleaning and adhesive is not required. The second type is a removable denture on an implant bar fixed to the jawbone which would provide a more secure fit so the artificial teeth can be removed for cleaning. The third type is a fixed implant supported bridges using four or more implants. This type of implant provides more bone stimulation that restores chewing function.
