Costa Rica News – We all know that when people head to Palmares they are looking to have a good time, listen to music and in most cases imbibe a lot of alcohol. Although there is public transport to and from many decide to try to drink and drive their way home.
This year the police cracked down a little harder on those that were braking the law and tried to drive home with a buzz.
Twenty-two drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated during the festival at Palmares this year.
The traffic police found that these individuals had exceeded 0.75 grams of alcohol per liter of blood. The legal limit is 0.50.
This is twice the number of people found driving drunk last year, but that may be due to increased controls on various pathways leading away from Palmares this year. This year they tested 661 drivers, while last year they tested just 179.
Eleven drivers had between 0.20 and 0.50 grams of alcohol per liter of blood and were thus fined ¢306,400 and got six points on their licenses. They will be required to take a theoretical course because of the six points.
All in all, 1,000 fines were made during this time period.
They included fines for illegal public transport, disregard of road signs, driving without a seatbelt and not carrying a license.
